Movie Review - Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice.

This blog is a thinking activity assigned by Megha Ma’am. In here, i shall give review of Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice.

Frankenstein -

Kenneth Branagh's 1994 adaptation of Mary Shelley's timeless novel, "Frankenstein," is a visually captivating cinematic experience. Exploring themes of creation, responsibility, and societal bias, the film immerses viewers in a tale of scientific ambition gone wrong.

Branagh himself takes on the role of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist consumed by the idea of bestowing life upon dead matter. His success in crafting a creature from body parts triggers a horrifying realisation, leading to his abandonment of the creation. Robert De Niro portrays the creature with intensity, revealing a character scarred both physically and emotionally by a world that shuns and misunderstands him. Branagh, as Frankenstein, effectively conveys the torment of his character's guilt and remorse.

Visually, the film is a treat, boasting lush cinematography and a Gothic aesthetic that vividly brings the source material to life. The creature's design is particularly noteworthy, solidifying its status as an iconic cinematic monster. The supporting cast, including Helena Bonham Carter as Elizabeth and Tom Hulce as Henry Clerval, delivers commendable performances that enrich the narrative.

Branagh's adaptation remains faithful to Shelley's novel while infusing the story with fresh perspectives. Notably, it delves deeper into the creature's backstory and motivations, offering a more sympathetic portrayal. Additionally, a subplot involving another mad scientist adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.

In summary, Kenneth Branagh's "Frankenstein" is a cinematic gem for fans of horror, Gothic literature, and classic cinema. With its compelling performances, stunning visuals, and exploration of profound themes, this adaptation earns its place as a must-see.

Pride and Prejudice -

Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's classic, "Pride & Prejudice," is a charming and heartwarming film that beautifully encapsulates the essence of the novel.

Keira Knightley shines in her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet, a quick-witted and independent young woman determined to marry for love rather than financial security. Opposite her, Matthew Macfadyen delivers a compelling performance as the proud and affluent Mr. Darcy, with whom Elizabeth gradually falls in love.

The supporting cast also excels, with Brenda Blethyn's comedic flair as the exuberant Mrs. Bennet, Donald Sutherland's wisdom as Mr. Bennet, Rosamund Pike as the graceful Jane Bennet and Tom Hollander's portrayal of the absurd Mr. Collins.

Joe Wright's direction is impeccable. He skillfully brings Austen's world to life through visually captivating cinematography and exquisite costumes, while also capturing the humor and wit inherent in Austen's dialogues. While remaining faithful to the novel, the film introduces some subtle alterations, including an increased focus on the interactions between Elizabeth and Darcy, which enriches their evolving relationship. The film also concludes on a more uplifting note compared to the novel, culminating in a picturesque outdoor wedding ceremony for Elizabeth and Darcy.

In summary, Joe Wright's "Pride & Prejudice" is a must-see for Jane Austen enthusiasts and lovers of romantic comedies. It stands as a delightful and heartwarming film that authentically translates the novel's essence to the screen.
